Stay safe, Aviators! #RepthatA

Hello again Aviators, With weather and overall conditions continuing to pose safety concerns, Alliance City Schools will be closed again tomorrow, Jan. 29. The cold temperatures, along with sidewalks and bus stops that remain buried under snow, are the main factors in our decision to close for one more day. We are hopeful to return to school on Friday, but forecasts seem to be changing by the minute now, so it’s hard to predict at the moment. If we are able to return on Friday, we know that some conditions will still be challenging. If you are able, we encourage families to begin planning and preparing by ensuring your child has a safe path to bus stops and is dressed in weather-appropriate clothing to stay warm during their morning commute. We will let you know by tomorrow at 3 pm whether or not we will be in school on Friday. As always, if you have weather-related concerns about your child attending school, you may call them off by calling the main office of their school. Athletic updates Tonight’s (Jan. 28) middle school boys and girls basketball games have been cancelled Tonight's (Jan. 28) varsity girls basketball game at Marlington has been cancelled, the game will be made up on Monday, Feb. 9 Tomorrow's (Jan. 29) middle school and Varsity girls and boys wrestling dual with Minerva has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12 Tomorrow's (Jan. 29) swim meet at Massillon is canceled with rescheduled date TBD Practices are only permitted for winter varsity sports and various pre-arranged music/arts/drama programs. Coaches/advisors will communicate with students and families. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these decisions. We have a lot of winter left, so keep your hats and gloves nearby! Rob Gress Superintendent of Schools

Aviators, Please see the following message from Mr. Gress.

On official school letterhead: Hello Aviators, What crazy weather we have been experiencing. Here in Alliance, it’s estimated that we received more than 14 inches of snow. Our city crews have done a great job working through everything for our city. However, sidewalks and bus stops are a major concern - many sidewalks and bus stops remain buried under a foot or more of snow. Almost every one of our bus stops have no place for our students to stand and only some residents have been able to get their sidewalks cleared. Additionally, with all the cars snowed in and the large piles of snow on the corners, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for our buses to make the tight turns they have to make to get to our students. The forecasted temperatures also present a concern to us. Generally, we close school when the wind chill reaches -15 degrees or lower in the morning. With these factors in mind, we will close again tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 27. We will make decisions for Thursday and Friday on a day-by-day basis. I can assure you that we do not make these decisions lightly and we always have what’s best for our Aviators in mind. We will do our best to make decisions in a timely manner to allow families adequate time to prepare if additional cancellations are necessary. Decisions regarding athletics and extracurricular activities will also be made and communicated on a day-by-day basis. Thanks for your patience and understanding and as always, stay safe, Aviators! Rob Gress Superintendent of Schools
You heard it from Mr. Gress... It's going to be cold! 🥶

The students in Jaime Brown’s class at Alliance Intermediate School took part in a Storymaker video contest before Thanksgiving! Students from across the country created 30–60 second videos using Storymaker, a software program that encourages creativity through storytelling. Students chose from a variety of Thanksgiving-related prompts and worked in small groups to create their videos.

The group consisting of Elisa Kern, Dallas Hollis, Lennon Davis, and Reese Sedei won the award for “Most Heartfelt Video” with their submission about Thanksgiving at Grandma’s house. We are so proud of these awesome Aviators! ✈

Two women smile while holding a framed certificate in front of an Alliance Aviator logo on a wall. The certificate reads “Hometown Hero of the Month” and recognizes Ashley Peterson. The women stand side by side, each holding one side of the frame.
A handwritten note addressed to Ashley thanks her for her dedication to students in Alliance City Schools. The message shares that a parent nominated her, saying their child would not be the exceptional student they are today without her. The note praises her positive impact and awards her Hero of the Month.

✈ Myra (Hopkins) Zink ✈
Position: Health Aide
School: Alliance Intermediate School
Graduation Year: 1967
Years at ACS: 10

Favorite Memory:
"Marching in the Orange Bowl Parade in front of the Flipper Float playing the theme song. I played the Clarinet. Thanks to Merrick Lewis, a well known Industrialist in Alliance and the president of Alliance Machine Company. He paid for our week-long trip to Florida where we marched in the parade."

Influential Staff Member:
"John Weitzel, the Band Director of the nationally known Alliance High School Marching Band. He is a GOAT (The Greatest of All Times). I learned about hard work, dedication and 'ONE MORE TIME' was his favorite phrase! He taught us lifelong lessons to live by."

Choosing to work for ACS:
"I retired from Summa Health Systems/Akron City Hospital in 2014 after 43 years of service as a Med-Sug RN. My neighbor Lori Gasparik asked me if I would be interested in a part-time job working for ACS as a Health Aide. And here I am starting my eleventh year. I love AIS staff and my students. They are like part of my family. I have learned so much and met so many wonderful people. I feel blessed for having the opportunity to give back to my community."

Importance of giving back:
"To be a good role model. If I can have a positive impact on just one of my students' lives it is worth it. How rewarding to give back to my alma mater by working as a nurse/health aide, which is the career path I chose following my graduation in 1967. I have been an RN for 54 years."

Ms. Zink’s compassion and commitment remind us how powerful it is when Aviators return to serve the next generation.🩵❤️ #RepthatA

🟢 SLIME TIME 🟢

Fourteen brave staff members at Alliance Intermediate School signed up to be slimed! Students bought tickets for a chance to dump a bucket of thick green goop on one of their teachers or staff members. Once their name was drawn, the student stood in front of their chosen victim… oops, we mean staff member! 😉

Five unlucky staff members were slimed: Jason Morgan, Katie Schlemmer, Paula Oesch, Tyler Triner, and Justin Kinder, who took not one but two buckets of slime!

Alliance City Schools recently held the 3rd Annual Futures Fest! ✈ The event is an evening full of career exploration that supports the district’s vision of preparing all Aviators for Life, College, and Careers.

The event featured a job fair with more than 70 vendors, including employers, colleges, and branches of the military. Students, families, and community members were able to stop by to talk with vendors and gather information about future careers, schooling, and opportunities. The evening also included a career fashion show featuring middle school students.

Futures Fest offers activities each year for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. This year, elementary students read about possible careers and filled out activity sheets about what they want to be when they grow up. #RepthatA
