300 Tickets Being Sold at $10 Each
As a fundraiser, the Auto Body and Auto Tech classes at Alliance High School are raffling off a 2003 Monte Carlo they have been rebuilding for the past four years.
Kevin Billingsley, the Auto Tech teacher, and Shawn Smith, former Auto Body teacher, wanted their students to get involved in a community service project, and felt rebuilding a car to raffle off was the perfect project for the students in Auto Tech and the students in the Auto Body class. It would provide them with hands on experience on repairing a car.
“The students did all the hard work,” Billingsley said.
Mel’s Towing donated two cars for this project- one to be rebuilt and one to be used for spare parts. All of the items needed to repair the car were donated from local businesses.
This was a big project for the classes who were working on the rebuild at the same time they were learning in the classroom and working on other cars. The plan was to have the car completed and raffled off within a year, but the workload of the classes didn’t allow for that.
Over the years, the students put new gaskets on the engine, changed the oil, serviced the transmission with new fluid and filter, added new rotors and brakes, refurbished the wheels, added four new tires and made sure all the lights worked. The frontend of the car had been wrecked which lead to the students replacing the headlights on the car.
“The body shop did a bunch of work to it and we did a bunch of work to it,” Billingsley said. “It’s been gone through and it’s ready. It’s ready for a new owner.”
Following the retirement of Smith this past school year, David Zimmer picked up where Smith left off as the new Auto Body teacher and helped to complete the car with his students.
This project had numerous sponsors including Napa Auto Parts, Heastand Auto Parts, Mel’s Towing, Van’s Tire & Brake, Lavery Auto, Conrad’s Auto Recycling and PPG Paints. This project would not have been possible without the generous donations and support of these sponsors.
This project was also possible with help from the students in Welding and Interactive Media. The Welding students helped with the project and the Interactive Media students created all the flyers and raffle tickets.
Raffle tickets are being sold for $10 a ticket. There are only 300 tickets being sold and all who wish to purchase a ticket must be 18 or older. Tickets can be purchased at all the sponsoring businesses listed above, or by emailing Billingsley at email@example.com. Tickets will be sold at the Kiwanis Pancake Jamboree on Saturday, Nov. 2 for those who wish to purchase a ticket for the raffle. Tickets can also be purchased during the Alliance High School’s Parent Teacher Conferences on Nov. 7.
The winner will be announced via the Alliance City School District’s social media accounts once all 300 of the tickets have been sold.
The money raised will be used to help students in need. Billingsley hopes to use part of the money to purchase work boots for students in the career tech programs who need them. He also hopes to use some of the money to purchase winter coats, scarves, hats and gloves for students in the district in need of those items.
