Dear Parkway and Rockhill Families,

During February we will explore special events such as Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Leap Year, and Presidents Day with a variety of fun activities that will teach us about the history and customs of these special days. February is also Black History Month. Black History Month was created by twentieth-century historian Carter Woodson, who believed black Americans were not adequately represented in the study of American history. Carter Woodson hoped for the day when black history would be accepted as a part of American history. Black History Month was officially declared by President Gerald Ford in 1976. A reminder that on February 17th school is closed in observance of President’s Day.

3rd quarter interim reports will be sent home on February 14th for students earning an “N’” (needs improvement) in any content area. The first grade teachers will be holding early spring conferences on Thursday, Feb. 20. Look for more information to come home this week. Second and third grade spring conferences will take place in early March.

Parkway and Rockhill Elementaries are holding very important meetings for parents of third grade students regarding the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. We will discuss the 3rd grade state assessment, the American Institute of Research (AIR), student Fall assessment scores will be available, and we will discuss the 3rd grade writing rubric and share sample questions from previous state assessments. We will be available to answer any questions you may have and provide more insight regarding this state assessment which will be administered again in April. The meeting for Rockhill families will take place February 10 @ 5:30 and Parkway families on February 11 @ 5:30.

Please join us for our Principal’s Cafe on Feb. 12 at 9:00 at Parkway Elementary in the library. The focus of this cafe will be on technology, internet safety and educational apps and websites.

We are so proud of the progress being made by our students! Their behavior is

“above the line” and they are continuing to show an increase in achieving their academic goals. Our elementary schools have shown a 58% average growth increase in their reading scores since the beginning of the year and a 55% average growth in math. We are committed to helping each student reach his/her academic potential while providing a safe and nurturing environment.

Your Partners in Education,

Mrs. Balderson
